Audacity overview
Audacity is a free audio recorder/editor/mixer. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files, and more. Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings. It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode, and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications. Built-in effects include Bass Boost, Wahwah, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST plug-in effects.

If you're running an Intel Mac Audacity 3.5.1 (Universal) hangs and won't complete verification.
I couldn't find a way around it but I tried the version of 3.5.1 specifically for Macs powered by Intel processors, and it worked fine.

Best freeware audio editor for me. A bit old looking interface, but it can do basically everything: Cut audio file, remove noise, change pitch, re-encode, and record. I hear even pros use it - and I don't understand 80% of the offered features, but it's perfect for my use cases.
